China's "father of hybrid rice" is planning to expand its production of sea-rice at a newly founded research center in Qingdao, a port city in the eastern province of Shandong, local sources said last Saturday.

Within three years, the sea-rice research and development center, headed by scientist Yuan Longping, is expected to expand the yield of sea-rice to 200 kilograms on each "mu," the Chinese unit equivalent to 666 square meters, according to local authorities in Qingdao's Licang District, where the new research body is located.

Wild sea-rice is sometimes found in saline-alkaline soil at the junctures where rivers join the sea.

The plant is resistant to pests, diseases, salt and alkali and does not need fertilizer. But its unit output is only around 75 kg.

The Qingdao research center will use gene sequencing to cultivate new strains of sea-rice that will yield more rice and grow with saline water.

With start-up funding of 100 million yuan (14.86 million U.S. dollars), scientists will start their experiment on a 2-hectare saline-alkaline marsh land just north of the Jiaozhou Bay in April.

Massive crop failure was reported in rice fields where strains developed by China's "father of hybrid rice" Yuan Longping were cultivated.

Significant crop loss caused by rice blast, a deadly disease affecting cultivated rice, hit almost 700 hectares of rice fields last year in Anhui province, a major rice producer in East China.

In the worst-hit areas, the yield of rice plummeted from 7,500 kilograms per hectare in average years to 750 kilograms per hectare last year, or even to none.

Local farmers blamed misleading advertisements for their loss.

On the package of seeds sold to farmers, the ad claims the strains have high disease-resistance levels, with an incidence rate of 25 percent. But inside the package, a piece of paper is attached, which says the seeds are of level-9 disease-resistance, suggesting the possibility of catching a disease is as high as 100 percent.

In response, the Yuan Long Ping High-Tech Agriculture Company says the poor yield in the autumn harvest season last year was mainly a result of a natural disaster which affected not only rice fields of the hybrid-rice strains developed by the company, but also other varieties.

Yuan Longping is known as China’s “father of hybrid rice”. It’s said that in China we eat depending on “Two Ping” ---- Deng Xiaoping who made the policy of System of Production Responsibility & Yuan Longping who invented hybrid rice. Yuan Longping who was born in September 1930 graduated from Agriculture Department in Southwest Agricultural Institute. He has been working on agriculture education & the research into hybrid rice since he left the institute. In the 1960s when China was suffering serious famine he came up with the idea of hybrid rice which has a high yield. Ten years later he succeeded in inventing a new species that produced a 20 percent higher yield than common types of rice. Yuan devoted himself to the research into agriculture & was honored by UNESCO & FAO. Although he is 70 years old he is still working on the research into agriculture.
